Solving environmental problems caused by oil shale extraction in Ida-Viru County
The objectives of the project in Ida-Viru County are:
- repairing collapses and subsidence in mines closed as a result of the extraction and processing of oil shale and other mineral resources;
- rehabilitating quarries damaged by mining and abandoned quarries containing construction waste.
- Repairing collapses and subsidence in closed mines
First, an analysis is commissioned to select the areas to be cleaned up. In the analysis, these areas are delimited and standard projects are drawn up to carry out the work. Restoration work is planned for 2025.
Existing collapses will be dealt with separately and no analysis is expected. These are dangerous holes that need to be tackled as a matter of priority. The work will take place in 2024.
- Restoring quarries
The selection and delimitation of the areas to be restored has been done. For a few areas, a more detailed restoration project will be needed. Restoration work is planned for 2025.
The project will be financed by the Just Transition Fund.
