MarTe – Marine Technology Innovation Network for Promoting Sustainable Blue Economy in the Baltics
MarTe is an Estonian-Latvian cooperation project funded by the European Union's research and innovation program Horizon Europe. It promotes the development of a sustainable and environmentally friendly blue economy in the Baltic Sea region from 2025 to 2028.
The aim of MarTe is to encourage the adoption of new technologies and environmentally friendly solutions throughout the entire maritime industry value chain. The project will establish a cross-border innovation strategy and support network to facilitate the testing of new technologies in the Baltic Sea environment. The project focuses on maritime technology applications such as offshore renewable energy production, smart marine machinery and ports, sustainable use of marine resources, and monitoring and improving the state of the marine environment.
The project involves 13 partners:
- Research institutions: Tallinn University of Technology, University of Tartu, Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, and the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology
- Public sector organizations: Environmental Investment Centre, Kurzeme Planning Region,Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, and Saaremaa Development Center
- Industry representatives: Association of Estonian Marine Industries, Freeport of Ventspils Authority
- Coastal communities and environmental organizations: World Wide Fund for Nature - Latvia, Baltic Coasts Association, and West Estonian Islands Partnership
Representatives from HELCOM, the Latvian Ministry of Environment, the Estonian Ministry of Climate, and the Estonian Ministry of Regional Affairs and Agriculture are part of the project council.
The ambition of MarTe is to establish a Baltic marine technology innovation network and contribute to the sustainable development of the blue economy in the Baltic Sea region by laying a strong foundation for implementing environmentally friendly and competitive solutions.
Total budget of the project: €4,999,822.50.
