In Tallinn, the EIC is organising the clean-up of algae from the Pirita roadside beach area. The works will be carried out both on the beach and in the water, along a 2 km stretch extending from Pikksilma Street to Maarjamäe Castle.

Algal mats accumulating on the beach and the water’s edge reduce the recreational value of the area, and the decomposition of algae leads to the spreading of an unpleasant odour.

The problem is caused by the eutrophication of Tallinn Bay and nutrients carried to the sea by the River Pirita. As well as the nutrients and microbial-rich storm water being discharged into Tallinn Bay.

Unfortunately, there is no simple solution to fix the problem, so the most effective solution at the moment is to simply remove the loose algae.
